Legislation on waste Batteries and Accumulators

Producers’ responsibility

Legislative Decree 188/2008 starts from the principle that responsibility is to be borne by Producers, where Producers of Batteries and Accumulators means anybody that places for the first time on a professional basis Batteries and Accumulators on the national market, including those incorporated into appliances or vehicles.

Producers are responsible for the waste, first and foremost for financing and organising a separate collection and recycling system for portable Batteries and Accumulators and ensuring a uniform service throughout the national territory.

Legislative Decree 188/2008

Legislative Decree No. 188 of 20 November 2008, that transposed in Italy the EU Directive 2006/66/CE on Batteries and Accumulators and outlines the rules for the proper management of waste Batteries and Accumulators, starting from the Producers – or consortia like Remedia which act on their behalf – who have the obligation of organizing and managing separate collection systems for Batteries and Accumulators as well as define the roles of the other players in the system, such as retailers, distributors, municipal collection points and citizens.
