The regulations on electronic waste have been in force since November 2007 and the new WEEE-management system is fully operative. To recover lost ground and to achieve European standards in pre-sorted waste collection, we must all – without delay – follow the proper procedures for managing technological waste.
Finding out whether the product you are throwing away is meant for pre-sorted waste collection is very simple: just check to see whether it shows the CROSSED BIN symbol.
If you have electrical and electronic equipment to dispose of, your local authority will tell you the location of the closest collection site where you can bring the equipment for pre-sorted collection, or you can click here to search it.
You are also advised that many local authorities have set up low-cost home-collection services for larger domestic appliances.
In this way old products will be collected separately and delivered to specialised treatment plants that carry out recovery operations with all due regard for the environment.
Do not throw WEEE into the bin with your garbage, or anywhere. Its only place is at a waste collection site where there are containers for pre-sorted waste collection.
You should know that there are heavy fines for disposing of waste illegally. It makes sense, therefore, to abide by the rules and behave responsibly.
