WEEE may contain substances such as heavy metals, brominated flame-retardants, halogenated substances, and ozone-depleting substances. Many are potentially hazardous to the environment if not treated or disposed of appropriately.
Do not throw WEEE into the bin with your garbage, or anywhere. The only place for it is at a waste collection site where there are containers for pre-sorted waste collection.
Technological developments and care for the environment: a possible convergence
By committing to the pre-sorted collection of WEEE, we can be sure they will be sent to specialised treatment-centres. There, not only are metallic, plastic and glass parts removed but so, too, will all components and substances harmful to the environment or to health.
Today, less than 2 kg of WEEE per capita in Italy undergoes pre-sorted collection, as against a European average of 5 kg and an output per capita of electronic waste of approximately 14 kg. Accordingly, it is vital for consumers to collect this type of waste properly, by pre-sorting it, and so contribute to safeguarding the environment.
